What’s in my bag?

Ahh, the all important topic of what to pack. I believe you can tell a lot about a person by what they deem as a ‘necessity’ when out on the trail, for some it might be a ukulele, a pile of books, or camera gear. For me it’s the latter.  Checkout what I carry for landscape photography.

First things first, getting a good backpack is a key ingredient to enjoying your time out backpacking.  My first bag was a cheap Alps Mountaineering bag that I used on my first 3 day hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail as well as a summer trip around western Europe.  The Alps bag didn’t offer much hip support and left my shoulders aching from supporting all the weight..it makes for a long day.

My second and current bag is a Deuter 75 liter beast.  This trusty friend has served me well on many trips ranging from a week long backcountry trek in Banff to a 6 week adventure through South America.  The support and adjustability of the Deuter makes it quite comfortable while it’s also large enough to handle long hauls.  If you’re in the market for a pack I’d highly recommend Deuter as an option to consider.

When a pack is pushing 55+ pounds at the beginning of a hike, you don’t want to add anything you don’t need. So for longer trips the food portions are carefully planned out so that no unnecessary weight or space is used up. And on the bright side, your load gets lighter as you eat more!

Depending on the length of the trip and the season, the gear I bring can vary quite a bit.
